I had the chance to learn celestial navigation during college on a sailboat in the Caribbean (lucky me). It was an oceanography research vessel and (cough) it was before GPS. Through navigating by stars, I found I developed a personal relationship with the celestial bodies and the constellations. One aspect that strikes me as appropriate to your navigation metaphor is that your guides (the stars) are brightest in the darkness. In fact, the darker it is -- say, a moonless night -- the brighter they shine.
